OUR STORY
Our journey began as a family-run business with a vision to make a difference in our community by creating job opportunities, up-skilling staff, and fostering a lasting legacy. We believe that by empowering individuals and nurturing a spirit of Ubuntu, we can cultivate a positive impact on society. This commitment to our mission is the driving force behind everything we do.
We work in close collaboration with The Kindergarten, The Waldorf School and The High School. Originally established in Pretoria in 1972, these institutions relocated to Rosemary Hill Farm in 1978. During the 80s and 90s, the focus was primarily on development, farming, and education, driven by a passion for nurturing both minds and land.
In recent times, the second generation of the founding family has taken the reins, bringing forth a harmonious blend of commercial growth, enhanced hospitality, and an array of leisure activities that continue to draw countless visitors to the farm.
At Rosemary Hill, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. As a working organic farm and hospitality destination, we are committed to responsible land stewardship, environmental preservation, and long-term regeneration.
For almost five decades, our vision has been rooted in harmony with nature — nurturing the soil, protecting biodiversity, and ensuring that every action taken today supports the health of tomorrow. Over 150,000 trees and shrubs have been planted through our reforestation efforts, creating a living ecosystem that provides habitat for wildlife, restores soil vitality, and offsets our carbon footprint.
Our farming methods remain strictly organic and biodynamic, guided by the belief that the earth thrives when left unpolluted by chemicals or synthetic inputs. We cultivate according to natural rhythms and cycles, allowing the land to replenish itself while producing food, flowers, and herbs that are as nourishing as they are sustainable.
Sustainability at Rosemary Hill extends beyond the fields and into every aspect of daily operations. We return all glass water and cold drink bottles to suppliers for refilling, including Coca-Cola, and even our preserved fig jars are sent back to be reused. All food served at our picnics and in the farm shop is packaged in 100% compostable and biodegradable containers made from sugarcane, supplied by Tomorrow Products. We also encourage mindful consumption — straws are only offered with milkshakes, sodas, and iced coffees, and our BioStraws are 100% biodegradable and compostable.
We make our own compost on-site using food scraps, cow and horse manure, and grey water from our treatment plant, enriching the soil and closing the loop. Effective Microorganisms (EM) are used throughout the farm and in our animal care to promote soil health, plant growth, and odour reduction naturally. We use drip irrigation — a sustainable system that delivers water directly to the roots of each plant. This smart approach not only conserves water but also nurtures stronger, healthier crops. By reducing evaporation and runoff, it minimises waste and keeps our soil thriving.
Our commitment extends into every corner of the farm. Solar installations now supply more than half of our total energy needs, and our off-grid laundry facility operates entirely on renewable power. Invasive species such as black wattle and eucalyptus are harvested for use as firewood — transforming environmental challenges into circular solutions.
Through these ongoing efforts, Rosemary Hill continues to evolve as a regenerative, low-impact destination — a place where sustainability is not just practiced, but lived daily through mindful choices, community collaboration, and a deep respect for the natural world.
